Adventure sport travel insurance is quite possibly the most important thing you need for your next trip. Whether you experience a flight cancellation, medical emergency, or your luggage is lost or stolen, your travel insurance plan will have your back. Although there are tons of things you could potentially take with you on your next extreme sport vacation, we don’t recommend you ever leave for an adventure without this one important lifeline.
Anyone who has travelled knows just how unpredictable life on the road can be. Of course, it’s nice to map things out in advance, but things rarely go to plan and we end up spending money on things we didn’t intend to due to unpredictable circumstances. When this happens a little too often, we run out of cash and must return home much earlier than planned. It’s also important to remember that, although we try to train and compete safely in our sport, accidents do happen, and we never know when we’ll require medical care abroad.
Adventure Sport Travel Insurance Plans
There are tons of adventure sport travel insurance plans out there and the options can often be overwhelming. Since we’ve been giving you the chance to LIVE your adventure dream here on Viral Dreaming, we thought we’d write a guide on how to choose the right adventure sport travel insurance and tell you where we think is the best place to get it. Here are a few things we think you need to look out for when choosing the right plan.
Firstly, you need to ensure that the plan offers a coverage limit on medical expenses of around $100,000. If you buy a plan that covers less than this then you may find it doesn’t cover all your expenses, should you end up in hospital due to illness or injury. You could also go higher than this figure if you really feel you need it, but we recommend going for a $100,000 policy to stay safe abroad.
In addition to medical coverage, you need to be covered for emergency evacuation. If you are involved in a serious accident, you may need to be evacuated to a hospital which will not be covered in your medical expenses. We recommend an emergency evacuation coverage limit of $300,000.
Good adventure sport travel insurance plans cover:
- Injury and sudden illness
- Emergency services and assistance (24 hrs)
- Lost or stolen items
- A range of cancellations due to emergencies e.g. hotels, flights and transport.
- Local emergencies that cause you to leave early
- Financial protection that covers bankruptcy of any company you are relying on to get you home
- Provides coverage in the majority of countries
Note: Some companies only offer a small amount of coverage for electronics, but you can increase this to suit your needs. If you’re an adventurer who uses a lot of travel gear then you need to make sure it’s covered.
Also, if you intend on participating in extreme sport then you must ensure that this is covered in your plan. Naturally, you will be required to pay a higher fee for this inclusion so always make sure your chosen sport is covered.

The bottom line here is, no matter who you buy your adventure sport travel insurance from, we don’t ever recommend leaving home without it. It’s one of those things that travellers have neglected in the past and almost always end up regretting; those individuals mostly end up returning home early after they’ve had to pay expensive hospital bills in a foreign country, or worse – they aren’t able to afford the fee and don’t get the care they needed.
The fact is, when we travel to a new destination, we’re venturing into the unknown – which is awesome! But when we do so, we need to understand that things work differently than they do in our own country and there are occurrences that we just cannot plan for, which makes a good travel insurance plan a vital piece of kit for any responsible adventurer.
